Essowedeou Jeremie Botobikpissi, presented his poster “Classification Algorithm on a Quantum Computer”, at the Garden State Undergraduate Mathematics Conference at Rowan College at Burlington County, NJ Saturday, March 29, 2025 and at ICUNJ Undergraduate Research Symposium at Bell Works, Holmdel, NJ April 1, 2025. Botobikpissi’s research was supported by ICUNJ with a Nokia Bell Labs Scholarship Advancing Women and Minorities in STEM.

Infinity Award January 2025

January 8, 2025, the New Jersey Epsilon chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon was presented with the Infinity Award (including a $500 grant). The award recognizes a chapter that exhibits strength of community and enthusiasm for PME and mathematics among its members, department, and institution including demonstrated sustained commitment to participation in PME’s national conference and other mathematics conferences.

Bautista and Pandey at the Pi Mu Epsilon Conference

Riza Bautista ’25 and Aakash Pandey ’25 presented their research at the Pi Mu Epsilon Conference in Seattle in conjunction with the Joint Mathematics Meetings on January 10, 2025. Bautista’s poster, “A mathematical model of neuropeptide-elicited rhythmic oscillations” was mentored by her Capstone Advisor Nickolas Kintos, Ph.D., and Pandey’s poster “Study of Patterns within Number Bracelets” was mentored by his Honors Thesis Advisor Dawn Nelson, Ph.D. (Pi Mu Epsilon is the National Mathematics Honor Society.)

Mathematics Alumnus Keynote Speaker

Sabin Pradhan, SPU alumnus BS’16, MS’18 and Lead Data Scientist General Mills, Inc. was the keynote speaker at the Data Science Showcase (sponsored by the Data Science Institute, the Institute for STEM Experiential Learning, and the STEM Poder Grant).

Pi Mu Epsilon 50th Anniversary

In 2018 the New Jersey Epsilon chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon, the national mathematics honor society, celebrated its 50th anniversary at Saint Peter’s University. Pi Mu Epsilon is dedicated to the promotion of mathematics and recognition of students who successfully pursue mathematical understanding.

Dr. Poiani Inducted as a Fellow of the Association for Women in Mathematics

This induction is for her sustained commitment to encouraging women and the underrepresented at all educational levels to pursue their study of mathematics. Professors of Physical Education and Mathematics Collaborate in Conference Session

James Clayton, Ed.D. ’71, associate professor of education; Michael Finetti, Ed.D., assistant professor of education and director of special education programs; Jay Garrels, Ph.D., chair of health & physical education; and Rebecca Conley, Ph.D., assistant professor of mathematics; recently presented a workshop at the New Jersey Education Association (NJEA) Annual Convention in Atlantic City, N.J. The breakout session was titled, “Math and Physical Education: Perfect Together.” This multidisciplinary team of professors offered ideas for incorporating math concepts and skills into a cooperative physical education setting. Special Education accommodations and modifications were also addressed during this time. Attendees participated in group activities and shared their own experiences working with an interdisciplinary curriculum. The session was enthusiastically received by NJEA members.

Jonathan Rodriguez ’20 (pictured right), a mathematics and business major, attended as a Pi Mu Epsilon delegate. Brian Hopkins, Ph.D., professor of mathematics and editor of The College Mathematics Journal of the MAA, was also in attendance.

To launch the anniversary, Sharon Pastore ’73, a distinguished alumna and trustee of Saint Peter’s University, presented the inaugural event: “Our Love for Mathematics=Our Love for Problem Solving.”

Eileen Poiani, Ph.D., HA ’17, special assistant to the president, and Madel Liquido ’17 attended MathFest in Chicago. At the event, Liquido gave a presentation at the Pi Mu Epsilon Conference. PME is the national mathematics honor society. Liquido is a SURGE fellow and a mathematics major. Her research is directed by Nickolas Kintos, Ph.D., associate professor of mathematics. Dr. Poiani served as the first woman president of Pi Mu Epsilon.
