On March 13, 2025, Saint Peter’s University proudly welcomed poet Dr. Angela Alaimo O’Donnell, who teaches English, Creative Writing, and American Catholic Studies at Fordham University and serves as Associate Director of the Curran Center for American Catholic Studies. She spoke to the university community as part of the annual Valente-Blihar Families Distinguished Poet Series.

“Literary Travels: Visions of Italy”

Over the spring break of 2025, the English Department took a group of twenty-six current students, alumni, faculty, staff and friends to Italy for “Literary Travels: Visions of Italy.” Among trip highlights was a guided tour of the Opera del Duomo Museum in Florence, hosted by museum designer and director–and Saint Peter’s alumnus of 1968–Monsignor Timothy Verdon. In Rome, Taylor Fulkerson, SJ, gave the group a tour of the rooms of Saint Ignatius of Loyola and the Chiesa del Gesu, where he is buried.

On Saturday, February 25, 2023, English department professors, Scott Stoddart, Ph.D. and Stephanie Prugh, Ph.D. took a group of students and faculty to see The Play That Goes Wrong Off-Broadway at New World Stages in New York City.

One-Act Play Festival

On Thursday, February 21, 2025 Writing Studies and English Department instructor Constance Wagner, M.A. a group of students from playwriting and composition classes attended a performance of five plays at the Short Play Festival — LUV 2025 at the The Players Theatre in New York City’s West Village. The LUV 2025 Short Play Festival showcases 5 plays weekly for three weeks in February that celebrate love in all its forms. One of the featured works was the play Choices written by Prof. Constance Wagner.

“Macbeth” Trip

On Saturday, December 8, 2024, English department professor, Rachel Wifall, Ph.D., along with Writing Studies instructor Constance Wagner, M.A. took a group of students and faculty to see William Shakespeare’s Macbeth at the Nimbus Arts Center in downtown Jersey City.

Poetry for All of Us

James Crews, renowned poet, teacher, and scholar visited campus as part of the Valente and Blihar Families Poetry Series on Tuesday, April 4, 2024. In his talk titled, “Poetry for All of Us” Crews shared his thoughts on the bonds poetry creates between people and inspired the audience with his personal anecdotes and poetry. Crews is the author of four prize-winning books of poetry—The Book of What Stays, Telling My Father, Bluebird, and Every Waking Moment—and a book of short essays, Kindness Will Save the World: Stories of Compassion and Connection. James also speaks and leads workshops on kindness, mindfulness, and writing for self-compassion.
