Professor Ernabel Demillo led a global journalism trip to Vietnam during the winter break, along with her co-faculty leader Georgia Kral. During the trip students met and interviewed David Clark and Rich Allen, two American Vietnam veterans who live in Vietnam and volunteer for Veterans for Peace in Da Nang. Clark and his wife Ushi, arranged a tour of the Da Nang Association of Agent Orange/Dioxin (DAVA), one of many centers in Vietnam providing care, education and rehabilitation for victims of Agent Orange.

The Vietnam Association for Victims of Agent Orange (VAVA) students gave a dance performance and the Saint Peter’s students spent time talking and playing with the kids. This was the highlight of the trip for many of the students. The Saint Peter’s group also presented Colonel To Nam, director of DAVA/VAVA, a donation, which is pictured here.

The program is designed to address underrepresentation in newsrooms in the United States. The summer fellowship/internship program includes tuition, room and board, transportation and a paid internship during the summer. At the end of the program, five students will be awarded a full scholarship to pursue their master’s degree at the CUNY Journalism School in New York City.

Adelia “Dee Dee” Faison Moore, associate director, events and partnerships, for Initiative, a marketing communications agency within the Interpublic network of companies, spoke to Adjunct Professor Kimberley Norsworthy’s marketing communications class. Moore talked to students about cause and mission related marketing and the intricacies of the FDA’s Fresh Empire campaign, which she oversees.

Fresh Empire is the FDA’s first public education program designed to prevent tobacco use among at-risk, multicultural youth. Moore works with the FDA to activate more than 500 Fresh Empire events around the country. Saint Peter’s University marketing communications students learned how these events are planned and executed.

Students got to see first hand how a live television show comes together. Connick’s special guests included actors Kurt Russell and Zach Woods (Silicon Valley, The Office) and child actress McKenna Grace. The students can be seen on TV April 21 and May 16!

Fourteen students accompanied by Cynthia W. Walker, Ph.D., associate professor and chair, Barna Donovan, Ph.D., associate professor, and data science graduate student, Chris Walker ’18, spent a week exploring WDW’s four major parks in Orlando, Fla. They attended classes about leadership, teamwork and the culture of excellence, explored the utilidors, the tunnels running underneath the Magic Kingdom and wandered through the rows and rows of micro-chipped costumes waiting for employees at Epcot. They also saw the special events room at the Living Seas, spoke with a staff member of Imagineering and competed in a scavenger hunt.
