Prof. Jung-ah Choi, Ph.D., assistant professor of education, organized a panel discussion at the Eastern Educational Research Association Annual Conference in Orlando, FL in February with her doctoral students Marcelle Jackson, Chris Cruz Cullari, Virginia Melendez and Melissa McBean. The panel, titled “Higher Education as a Place of Oppression or Place of Hope?: Voices from the Margins” included presentations by the doctoral students and was followed by a Q&A. Echoes & Reflections Holocaust Education Training

The Caulfield School of Education, in conjunction with the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies, will be sponsoring “Echoes & Reflections: Teaching the Holocaust, Empowering Students,” a training workshop for educators on how to teach about the Holocaust. You are invited to take part in the training session. At the end of the workshop, you will receive a certificate stating you completed the course. This is an excellent opportunity for current and future social studies and history teachers.

The workshop will take place from 9AM-3PM in the Degnan Room in Saint Peter Hall on Friday, 21 September 2018. Lunch will be served during the course of the day. Attendees must register. To reserve your spot, please use the following link.

Dr. Clayton Participates in National Teachers’ Conference

This summer, James Clayton, Ed.D., of the Caulfield School of Education, presented a breakout session for pre-service and active classroom teachers at the 2018 Educators Rising National Conference in Orlando, Fla. The title of the presentation was “Let’s Bring Social Justice into Elementary Classrooms!” Educators Rising is a division of Phi Delta Kappa International, a professional organization for practicing educators at all levels.

Associate Professor of Education Nicole Luongo, Ed.D., recently published a new textbook “The New World of Assessment: Teaching in a Digital World,” which is now available for purchase. The first edition of this textbook is designed to provide current and future K-12 teachers with an introduction to the essential concepts and principles of student assessment and evalsuation. The book examines trends in testing, namely, psychological, standardized and achievement tests and the rationale and assumptions underlying these assessments. It provides readers with helpful information regarding traditional paper-and-pencil methods of assessment, as well as newer methods, including online assessment. Learn more here.

James J. Clayton, Ed.D., Associate Professor in the School of Education, Presents at NJEA in Atlantic City

On November 9, 10 and 11, Saint Peter’s University sent a contingent of administrators, teachers and admissions officers to Atlantic City for the annual NJEA Teachers Convention. On Thursday, November 10, Dr. James Clayton addressed the New Jersey State Board of Education regarding the negative impact of current regulations for student teachers, explaining that the additional time demands and testing costs are discouraging teacher candidates statewide. On Friday, November 11, Dr. Clayton presented a professional development workshop on questioning strategies.

Remember Agnes Sparrow ’14, ’16 in your Prayers

Please keep Agnes Sparrow in your thoughts and prayers. She passed away recently. She was in pursuit of a doctoral degree in educational leadership in a higher educational setting and she had received her master’s in public administration last May. The services for Agnes Sparrow will be today from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. in the Emeritus Room in Pope Hall. There will be a prayer given followed by a memorial service.

Golden Door Film Festival

The Department of Business Administration, the Guarini Institute for Government and Leadership, the Department of Communication and Media Culture and the Caufield School of Education are proud to host film screenings for the critically acclaimed Golden Door International Film Festival on September 23, 24 and 25. Films will be screened in Pope Lecture Hall on all three days and in McIntyre Conference Center A on Saturday and Sunday. Students can enter for free with a student ID. Dr. Clayton Presents at Math Conference

On Saturday, May 2 Dr. James Clayton of the School of Education co-presented a workshop at the Spring Math Conference of the Minnesota Council of Teachers of Mathematics (MCTM) in Duluth. Dr. Clayton presented with Dr. Joan Kwako of the University of Minnesota – Duluth. The topic of the presentation was “Racial Profiling in Elementary Math?” The professors are collaborating on a project to teach prospective teachers strategies to incorporate social justice issues in elementary mathematics classes.
